Recent Taxotere lawsuits allege that Sanofi, manufacturer of the chemotherapy drug Taxotere, failed to properly warn patients of the risk of permanent hair loss associated with the drug.
Taxotere may cause permanent hair loss
Hair loss is a common side effect of many cancer-fighting drugs, and is not uncommon among chemotherapy patients. However, most patients will experience gradual regrowth after finishing their chemotherapy treatment. For some Taxotere patients, unfortunately, this regrowth never came. According to recent studies, up to 10% of Taxotere patients may experience permanent hair loss, or alopecia, after using the drug.
Numerous patients have now come forward as plaintiffs in suits against Sanofi, Taxotere’s manufacturer, alleging that they were never warned of the potentially permanent nature of this side effect. The suits allege that, prior to 2015, no warnings were published in the United States about Taxotere’s hair loss risks.
Although the FDA now requires explicit warnings surrounding the drug’s use, it is already too late for many patients.
Taxotere lawsuits have been filed
Several plaintiffs allege that they would not have used Taxotere if they’d known of the risk of permanent hair loss, and would have instead sought another treatment option. Unfortunately, many patients were never given this choice.
The plaintiffs also allege that Sanofi engaged in “aggressive marketing and advertising campaigns that misled consumers as well as the medical community” as to the drug’s risks.
To date, few independent studies have been conducted to determine the cause of Taxotere’s permanent side effect, and it is not yet known why the drug affects some patients and not others.
